By day, Paul Macklin is an Associate Professor of Intelligent Systems Engineering at Indiana University, and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at IU. He teaches introductory machine learning and mathematical biology. He mentors young scientists to use open source simulation software as "virtual microscopes" to understand cancer and the immune system. By night, Paul is an amateur astrophotographer. He uses a variety of telescopes and processing techniques to photograph and share the beauty of the night sky from his Indiana backyard. He particularly loves creating mosaics of nebulas--often combining tens of hours of imaging to capture the subtle glows of ionized gases, and the light of bright new stars reflected by interstellar dust.
